X10 Troubleshooting Guide

X10 devices are extremely easy to install and are very reliable; however things can sometimes go wrong.  These checklists will help you diagnose the most common problems.

Help, nothing works!
If the system was previously working, but has stopped, the problem is probably a simple one.  Perhaps a component of the system has been moved or disconnected, or a setting has been changed.  Try checking these things:

  • Are the batteries in your remote good?  The LED on the remote should flash when a code is transmitted

  • Has the RF transceiver been unplugged or switched off?

  • Has the X10 controller you are using been unplugged?

  • Has the House Code been changed inadvertently?

  • Is power available at the outlets?  If not check fuses and circuit breakers.

  • Have you installed a new appliance that is causing interference (e.g. baby monitor that uses power line transmission)

  • Have you recently installed a surge protector on the outlet the controller or transceiver is plugged into?

If you still cannot control any modules, plug your controller or transceiver and one module into the same power outlet (using a non surge-protected multi board if necessary) and try again.  If the problem persists you probably have a faulty device.

If the system has not worked before, the most likely problems are:

  • Incorrect House code settings

  • Power line interference

  • Multiple phase power supply to building

  • A faulty device

Just one device doesn’t work
If the device was previously working, first check the following:

  • Does the light or appliance work if you plug it directly into the outlet?

  • Is there power available at the outlet?  Confirm by plugging in another appliance.

  • Is the House code on the module set correctly?

  • If the module does not respond, try another module set to the same House and Unit Code.  If the new module works, the original is probably faulty.

  • Have you recently installed a surge protector on the outlet the module is plugged into?

  • Another device might be interfering with X10 signals by causing power line noise. Try disconnecting suspect appliances, starting with those in close vicinity to where the problem is.

Devices work only intermittently
The most likely causes are:

  • Flat batteries in RF remotes

  • Power line interference

  • Modules marginally too far away from the controller or transceiver
